For investors

Understand the work. Then the investment.

New to oil investing or bringing years of experience? Get to know Independence Energy, explore the questions that matter, and start a conversation with our team.

Four people in conversation, framed by equipment at a field site.

Where are you starting?

Pick the path that fits. Both lead to the same place: a direct conversation and your own independent review.

You don’t need to arrive knowing every term. Start with three questions.

What would I own?

Ask what interest is being offered and which documents define your rights. Different structures can carry different obligations.

Where would the money go?

Understand the proposed use of funds, fees, and costs. Ask how those costs affect the money available to investors.

What could change?

Discuss operating risks, possible additional funding, and restrictions on selling your interest. Know what a difficult outcome could mean for you.

Understand the downside, too.

Private oil and gas investments can involve loss of the entire investment and may need to be held indefinitely. Discuss suitability with an independent adviser before deciding.

The terms, in plain English.

You’ll hear these words in almost any oil and gas conversation. Here is what each one means.

Working interest (WI)
A share of the right to drill and operate on a lease. Working-interest owners pay their share of the costs to drill, operate, and maintain the wells.
Net revenue interest (NRI)
The share of production revenue an owner receives after royalties and other burdens are paid. It is usually smaller than the working interest.
Royalty interest
A share of production revenue, usually held by the mineral owner, that does not carry the costs of drilling or operating the wells.
Lease operating expenses (LOE)
The ongoing costs of running producing wells, such as power, field labor, repairs, and water handling.
Joint interest billing (JIB)
The statement an operator sends working-interest owners showing each owner’s share of the costs on a lease.
Division order
The document that records each owner’s decimal share of production revenue so the purchaser can pay them.
